4Random Photo Memory: Lesotho Sheepherder
Lesotho seems to be one of those obscure countries that few have even heard of. Shame really, as it’s quite a remarkable little land that’s completely surrounded by the vast country of The Republic of South Africa. Part of the legendary “Drackensburg” mountain range and nicknamed “The Kingdom in the Sky” the entire country lies above a mile high, and thus is the highest country in the entire world!
I seem to have few travel portraits among my (considerable!) photo collection (no doubt because I’m generally shy of wantonly snapping pics for fear of offending the locals*), so this one is especially precious to me.
*Indeed, as an expat here in Vietnam, I seem to be nothing if not a perpetual curiosity to Vietnamese photographers young and old, and I now know full well what it’s like to have some stranger point a camera in my face. ;(
Excellent photo!!
I’d heard of Lesotho, but knew nothing about it. I’m going to go look it up.
Glad I could peak your interest in Lesotho, Paul. It truly is most remarkable little place.
I’ve always been fascinated by Lesotho. The idea of a country within another country is so interesting. It must be a very unique place.
It’s gotten easier for me to photograph others after living in China for the past year. They certainly aren’t shy about snapping me!
Little Lesotho IS a most unique place, cosmo – and visiting there was among the highlights of my wander around southern Africa.
