It’s been awhile for me Paul, but I believe the powder/paste on the lads face is “thanaka” – a traditional Burmese skin concoction ground from the bark of a tree, and used as a sunscreen, beauty cream, et al. Many of the Thai Hill Tribe peoples emigrated to Thailand from Burma, thus you often see such smears on the faces of women and children.
